This tape has been kickin' around on my shelf for years and I can't remember how I got it because I never saw this band...I mean they were my friends...They probably just gave it to me one day and I don't remember. That's not the important part. The important part is that these songs rule and you will want to hear them if you have even the slightest interest in scrappy southern hardcore and great, energetic punk. Some of the songs fly by at 100 mph with a trade off of female/male vocals that may remind you of
PINK COLLAR JOBS. That would be an astute observation since one of the singer/guitarists used to be in that band. They recorded this demo in the dank-ass basement at 38 Mulberry in Woodfin, NC, possibly amid a pile of empty 40 bottles and dog shit. This band existed roughly from 2000-2002 and got to see the world changing dramatically around them as towers were falling and bombs started dropping. I'm not just saying this for effect...it actually sounds like they were informed by the world falling apart around them.
Lynn was probably playing in 5 other bands at the same time as this band and went on to play in
NASTY PONIES. Blair is currently working on his brain-bending and phenomenal artwork as he always has. He was doing that before I ever met him...which was about 18 years ago. You can (and should)
check out his stuff right here. Their drummer, Jason was and still is (?) playing in the long-running southern hardcore/crust band
KAKISTOCRACY. I'm not sure what is up with their bass player, Kyanne, but she was always doing interesting and cool things, so I'm sure that hasn't changed.

Thanks to Blair Menace for the cover art, pictures, extra info and for being a friend for all these years, despite everything.

Nice, thanks a lot for this - it sounds great! Yeah, 9/11 happened like a week before we recorded this, so I was definitely weighing on the whole thing, even though the songs were already intact. I have a distinct memory of sitting upstairs at 38 watching the first wave of American bombers hitting Afghanistan on the news in between takes.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe how fast these songs are; I must be getting old...
These songs are super fast! I hitchhiked to Asheville on 9/11 and got drunk with DB and Andy Neubauer (and probably you) at Woodfin.
ReplyDeleteFuck yeah Bomb Threat! still wear my ol jeans with a pink & camouflage bomb threat, tem eyos ki and murder of crows patches...
